Yes, you can request to alter your status from tourist to student, but when your current study visa expires, you will be unable to apply for a new study permit from within Canada. This implies you will not be given further time to renew your study or work visa.

You must first finish a short-term obligatory course to convert your Canadian Visitor Visa to a Study Permit (Visa). Once you have finished the appropriate curriculum, you will be entitled to apply for a student visa in Canada.

Tourists who study for less than six months do not require a study visa or authorization. As long as their visiting visa is valid, they can complete the course. Visa extensions will not be eligible for finishing a short-term program.

If you want to participate in a long-term educational program from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) that lasts more than 6 months or exceeds the permissible time limit of your stay, you must apply for a study visa from outside Canada.

You do not need to get a new study visa if your V-1 visa is valid for a longer period of time than your study permit. Because most single-entry visitor visas are only valid for 6 months, you will need to get a Study Visa in addition to your passport and study permit (S-1).

How to apply for a Study Permit as a Visitor in Canada?

To apply for a Canadian study permit and visa, please follow the steps outlined below:

  • A letter of enrolment from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

  • Proof of finances to demonstrate that you can afford your tuition, living expenses, and return travel.

  • Proof of no criminal records.

  • A medical checkup to demonstrate excellent health

  • Evidence that you intend to depart Canada after your studies are completed

You must wait for your application to be accepted after submitting it.

Following acceptance, you will be given a letter of recommendation as well as an S-1 visa, all of which must be shown at Canadian border control along with a valid passport. You will be issued a student permit that will allow you to stay in Canada for the duration of your study plus 90 days after approval.
